Tragic Incident in Mediterranean: Three Migrants Confirmed Dead

Sun 11th May, 2025

In a harrowing event during a crossing from Libya to Italy, at least three migrants have drowned, including two young children aged between three and four years old. This incident was reported by the German humanitarian organization Resqship, which operates the rescue ship 'Nadir'. A total of 59 individuals were rescued from the inflatable boat, which had set sail from the Libyan port of Sawija.

After a day at sea, the boat's motor failed, leaving the migrants vulnerable to the elements. The vessel was eventually spotted by a surveillance aircraft from the EU border agency Frontex, drifting south of the Italian island of Lampedusa.

Many of the survivors suffered severe chemical burns caused by a mixture of seawater and fuel, as explained by a medical professional onboard. The dangerous journey across the central Mediterranean continues to claim lives, with nearly 25,000 migrants reported dead or missing since 2014, according to the International Organization for Migration. This includes approximately 1,700 fatalities in the previous year and 378 so far this year.

The ongoing crisis highlights the perilous conditions faced by those attempting to seek safety in Europe through one of the world's deadliest migration routes. Despite the risks, desperate individuals continue to embark on these dangerous journeys in search of a better life.

Humanitarian organizations are urging for increased efforts to address the root causes of migration and improve safety for those seeking asylum. The recent tragedy underscores the urgent need for comprehensive solutions to prevent further loss of life at sea.
