Search Efforts Intensify for Missing Soldiers in Ukraine

Thu 19th Jun, 2025

As the conflict in Ukraine continues, a significant number of women are actively seeking information about their missing family members, particularly soldiers who have gone missing in action. This grassroots movement, which has emerged during the ongoing war, unites mothers, wives, daughters, and other female relatives who are determined to locate their loved ones.

Many of these women have formed informal networks and support groups across the country, collaborating to share information and resources as they navigate the challenges of searching for missing soldiers. The process of prisoner exchanges is often shrouded in secrecy, with details about the locations and times of exchanges kept from the public, including journalists.

On a recent day, hundreds gathered at a clinic in Chernihiv, anxiously waiting for news of soldiers returning from captivity. Among them was a retiree from Khmelnytskyi, who has not missed a single exchange in over a year. Her son, who disappeared near the front lines in Bakhmut, remains unaccounted for, and she holds tight to photographs of him, hoping for a miracle.

Families often cluster together in the shade of trees, organizing themselves by the military units of their loved ones or the prisons where they are believed to be held. Many share similar stories of despair; one mother mentioned that despite sending only a single letter to her son in captivity, she has received no response. This waiting and searching have become a part of their daily lives.

A notable case involves a brigade that lost over 1,300 members in Mariupol, with families still holding onto hope for their loved ones' safe return. Despite the long wait, some families have received updates from released soldiers who have reported seeing their missing relatives in captivity, providing a glimmer of hope amidst the uncertainty.

During these exchanges, the atmosphere is charged with emotion. Families are instructed on how to welcome returning soldiers, which includes showing gratitude and offering support. However, as soldiers disembark from transport buses, the sheer volume of names and faces overwhelms the situation, leading to a chaotic, albeit heartfelt, reunion.

The role of families in identifying missing soldiers cannot be overstated. They assist in matching names to faces in videos released by Russian authorities, a crucial step in the release process. More than 6,000 Ukrainian soldiers are currently reported as prisoners, and families are actively involved in efforts to reduce this number.

Despite the ongoing efforts, approximately 65,000 individuals are still classified as missing, with many families resigned to the possibility that their loved ones may not return. Yet, they continue to support one another, attending exchanges and public gatherings to maintain visibility for their loved ones.

Activists and families are also engaged in various initiatives to raise awareness and support for those affected by the conflict. One daughter of a captured marine has started a charitable organization to help families navigate the challenges they face, including securing state benefits and advocating for their loved ones.

Despite the difficulties, the community of families remains resilient. They are determined to keep the search for their missing loved ones alive and continue to seek answers, underscoring the profound impact of the war on individuals and families across Ukraine.
